Assistant Director, Communication and Assistive Device Laboratory (CADL)

Buffalo, New York ~ September 09, 2021

This assistant director position will be responsible for working with the Director of the Communication and Assistive Device Laboratory (CADL) to develop, implement and carry out the research activities of CADL  on a daily basis. CADL is currently funded by federal and foundation grants to research technology-related interaction problems experienced by individuals with complex communication needs. The principal investigator is Jeff Higginbotham, Ph.D., Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences.
The candidate will have a demonstrable record of leading interdisciplinary groups of scientists, clinicians and engineers engaged in research and development. A background in industrial and/or biomedical engineering with healthcare and or disability related fields is highly desirable. The candidate must be able to acquire sufficient knowledge of the pertinent research areas to conduct research projects. The successful candidate will demonstrate attention to detail, strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Given the nature of the research area, a successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to diversity and equity. Experience in community outreach and community organization is highly desirable. Responsibilities include:
●        Manages goals and budget of Project Converse. Develops reports to Sponsor.
●        Primary responsibility for developing and managing design/engineering component for Project Converse
●        Manages human resource components of Project Converse and Project Open. Works closely with department and college HR for hiring and personnel management.
●        Manages hardware and software functionality for CADL. Works closely with CASET to arrive at solutions.
●        Responsible for equipment, materials procurement for CADL. Works closely with department staff to submit and manage procurements.
●        Primary responsibility for developing the eye-tracking research project
●        Responsible for organizing and managing student research efforts in CADL
●        Responsible for organizing and coordinating Project Converse lab meetings and conferences.
●        Works with staff to develop more efficient and effective methods for developing products and services.
●        Attends and presents at workshops, national and international conferences.
●        Works as a liaison between Project Converse and technology manufacturers.
●        Engages in market research and CADL program marketing strategies.
●        Creates and maintains project management initiatives.
●        Writes and/or assists in the development of grants, protocols, manuscripts, etc.
●        Carries out, collects data and consents participants in CADL-sponsored research.
●        Engages in transcription and analysis of human performance data.
●        Coordinates research projects. Works with students and staff to problem solve and develop research plans and realistic time frames for project completion.
